Glentrool wildfire severity mapping
In April 2025, a large wildfire broke out near Glentrool, in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, and quickly spread to cover an extensive area of the Galloway Hills.

Damage was largely confined to open hill ground, where it rapidly through grassland and moorland habitats. However, adjacent forest compartments managed by Forest & Land Scotland were also affected.
Within days of the fire being brought under control. Crossbill Forestry produced detailed maps of fire severity, based on the delta normalised burn ratio, as calculated from Sentinel2 observations.

These maps and their underlying data were shared with the land managers to support their response to the fire, and can be viewed and explored using the interactive map below.

dNBR values have been summarised on FLS sub-compartments to reveal fire severity and burnt area by sub-compartment.
